Brand Ambassador Spotlight: My Dog Stink

Have you seen the photos we’ve posted on social media or in the 2018 Fall Supplemental catalog of the little dog on the beach sporting the new Pro Waterproof Harness? If you haven’t, you need to; if you have, that’s Stink!

Posing _stink

Stink is a soon-to-be 9-year-old Jack Russell who lives on the beaches of Florida. 5 years ago, Stink’s dad was checking out the free section on Craigslist looking for air conditioning parts. Much to his surprise, there was a sweet, 4-year-old dog whose family no longer wanted him listed for free. Stink’s mom, Sara, said he was a wild child, which was toned down after being neutered within the first week of living with his new family.

If you’re like me, you’ve wondered to yourself, how do you come up with a name like Stink? As it turns out, years before Stink was in their lives, his mom and dad were thinking about funny things to name a dog. The two thought of Stink and it stuck! Stink’s personality just fit the name perfectly.

On his Instagram, @mydogstink, you will often see Stink with at least one of two things: crabs or his girlfriend, Hula. Stink is obsessed with crabs! He can frequently be seen digging them up and barking up a storm after. As it turns out, Stink traded one habit for another – he used to be obsessed with birds. He would constantly try to catch them on the shoreline, nearly pulling Sara’s arm off in the process. One day, she tossed a small shell down a crab hole and he never looked back. You can also see stink with his girlfriend, Hula. It was love at first sight three years ago when Hula was just a puppy. Hula was born in the woods, so she gained excellent survival skills. On the other hand, Stink doesn’t always know when to move out of the sun when he gets too hot. They do say opposites attract!

Hula _and _stink

In addition to crabs and Hula, stink loves digging in the sand and swimming in the ocean. If he’s not at the beach, he loves running next to bicycles and playing with squeaky toys. He also loves when his toys are hidden, and Sara asks, “where is it?” He does everything he can to find that toy! Stink is also a professional treat beggar, especially for cheese. How could you say no to that face?

Currently, Stink has over 26,000 followers on Instagram. It all began back in 2015 with a full iCloud account. Sara wanted a way to preserve pictures of him, so a friend guided her along the way and taught her about social media and Instagram. Little by little, her “original 7” followers grew with the use of hashtags and with winning a few Instagram contests.

With the fame of Instagram comes “stinking” cute merchandise. Stink’s photos have not only been used for pencil cases and notebooks, but he was also Mr. January in Pooping Pooches 2018 calendar! You guessed it, that’s a calendar dedicated to pictures of pooches going number 2. Good news though if you would love a calendar without any bodily functions, Sara just put together a Stink calendar for 2019. The link to the calendar can be found on his Instagram profile.

When asked what they love most about being part of the Coastal family, Sara said Stink loves all of the amazing gear and toys he’s received. Stink and Hula can be seen on Instagram sporting the new Pro Waterproof line and playing with their Fetch toys. Sara hopes we come out with a soft bristle paw cleaner as well as cooling shirts or bug protection outfits.

If you need your day brightened in any way, Stink can help. Whether it be cute smiles in costumes, crab digging with his butt in the air, or just swimming in the ocean, photos from @mydogstink never disappoint.

Brand Ambassador Spotlight: the Sunshine Dogs

If you have seen the 2018 Coastal Pet catalog, you have seen our first brand ambassadors chosen to be in the spotlight! Charlie and Sprout, also known as the Sunshine Dogs, are the cover models! The boys live near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which isn't too far from Alliance, Ohio where Coastal Pet is located. One day last year, they made the drive to Alliance's very own Silver Park for a photoshoot.

Charlie and Sprout

Charlie and Sprout can be seen going on fun adventures while sporting their Coastal gear on their Instagram page, @thesunshinedogs. Around a year and a half ago, Cassandra, the boys’ mom, decided that her friends might be tired of seeing photos of Charlie’s sweet face on her personal Instagram account, so she created an account just for him. Turns out, he was much more popular than she could have imagined – he soon had more followers than she did.

In August 2017, the fun doubled for Charlie the Sunshine Dog when Sprout joined the family. While Charlie was rescued from an unknown fate after being listed on Craigslist when he was just a puppy, Sprout came from a non-profit, no-kill shelter in Plum, Pennsylvania called Southwest PA Retriever Rescue Organization, or SPARRO. SPARRO prides themselves in being a safe place for wayward, abandoned, unwanted, or abused retrievers. They treat the dogs in their care as family and work with them to ensure they are trained with basic commands and how to walk on a leash.

Charlie and Sprout quickly became best brothers. Charlie loves the sunshine and would be pleased with just relaxing in the same spot all day. His mom compares him to Garfield! Sprout on the other hand, comparable to the Tasmanian Devil, is much more energetic. Give him time to burn off all of his puppy energy though and he will soon be following Charlie’s relaxation lead.

Both boys love going on adventures and having fun. Their favorite thing to do is ride the Side by Side at camp. Their mom and dad wanted the boys to be more comfortable, so they had a custom cover made for their Polaris General so the bed would have some shade. Recently, Charlie and Sprout enjoyed an 8-hour ride; the cover not only protected them from inclement weather, but it also kept them secure so there was no danger of falling off or jumping out from the back of the vehicle.

There’s only one thing Charlie and Sprout enjoy more than their fun adventures, and that’s their high-quality treats. They have two absolute favorites – Tiny Cause’s all natural, homemade peanut butter treats and homemade Apple of My Eye treats from All Bark Boutique.

If you follow the Sunshine Dogs on Instagram or Facebook, you will notice something in common with most of their pictures – Coastal! They are frequently sporting Coastal attire or giving us a shout-out. Charlie and Sprout have their own favorite product, the Li’l Pals Mesh Pig, but their mom and dad are huge fans of the front connect harnesses. Charlie wears the Walk Right, while Sprout wears the new Pro Mesh harness.

When asked what is enjoyed most about being part of the Coastal family, Cassandra said that from day one, they have all been treated like family. From being spoiled with great products to test and use, new toys to play with, to being treated like celebrities when they visited Coastal. They also love that we go above and beyond to spoil them – including custom holiday collars and custom pineapple pattern collars (which Cassandra mentioned in the interview she would love to see Coastal come out with).

We look forward to seeing our great relationship with the Sunshine Dogs grow. Be sure to check them out on Instagram or Facebook, you might just see something you recognize!

Time to Pawty - It's DOGust!

Did you know that all shelter dogs share the same birthday? It’s not really the same birthday, but since shelter workers can never be sure of an animal’s birthday or age, August 1st is known as the Universal Birthday for shelter dogs!

Last year, we had a blast celebrating my dog’s 13th birthday. I’m sure if he could talk, he would highly recommend his birthday adventure to anyone trying to think of how to celebrate their dog in the month of DOGust.

First, we took a trip to our local pet store. After roaming the aisles looking for treats, Rambo got to pick out a new toy. Full disclosure: he left with multiple. You’re only 13 once though, right?

Dogust - pet store

After the pet store, we headed to his favorite spot – a local park with walking trails and a small lake. He was happy to take the short walk to the area where he can take a dip in the water and cool off.

Dogust - park

We rounded out the afternoon with everyone’s favorite – ice cream. The local ice cream stand we went to even has small dishes meant just for dogs. Part of the fun was watching him keep a close eye on the girls making his ice cream cup. The focus!

Dogust - ice cream

If your dog is more of a homebody, Rambo also approves of homemade Pumpkin Peanut Butter Oatmeal Dog Biscuits as a way to celebrate your dog. They are pretty easy to make and he (along with some of his dog friends) love them.

What if you don’t have a pet to pamper? Visit your local shelter! Here at Coastal, a randomly selected group of employees get to visit a local shelter for the day instead of working. We typically take a donation of toys, collars, leashes, or harnesses – whatever the shelter says they need most. A few things that I know my favorite local shelter always needs are healthy treats, soft canned food, and pill pockets. The shelter you choose will most likely have a dog that fits your preferences – big and small, they have them all! Sit and snuggle, or get up and romp; whatever you choose, you’ll be making that dog’s DOGust day.

However you decide to celebrate, remember – have fun! Dogs are special and give us unconditional love, no matter what. They deserve at least one day that’s all about them.

Hello July! Hello Summer! Hello Good Times!

My love for summer is strong. I love the smell of fresh cut grass, hearing the birds sing, watching the lightening bugs in my yard and swimming at the local lake. Just try to name a negative of summer – it’s nearly impossible! Still not a summer fan? Well, let’s try to fix that. Here are some fun summer ideas for you and your pets to enjoy together. Everything is better when your pet is involved!

Swim, Swam, Swum

Swimming is always a great option! Head to your local dog-friendly lake or ocean, kick back and relax. The water will be an enjoyable break from the heat for you and your dog.

Your dog not a swimmer? That’s okay too. Try a kiddie pool in the backyard. This a shallow version that will still allow your dog to cool their bellies on those hot summer days. Still not convinced? Try a sprinkler!

Don’t forget some lake/beach day necessities:

  • Waterproof Collar
  • Lifejacket (optional)
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel
  • Travel Water Bowl
  • Snacks
  • Poo Bags

Everyone deserves a refreshing treat on a hot day. Consider making some frozen treats to help your dog cool off. It’s an added bonus that they look adorable, so this could be become your next selfie opportunity.

What You Will Need:

  • Plain Low-Fat Sugar
  • Real Maple Syrup
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries

Speaking of selfies, summer is photo season! Don’t let a season go by without taking some fun photos. Blow bubbles, play fetch, or just snuggle your pet. These are all great options for some fun photo/video opportunities. Maybe the photos you take will inspire you to start scrapbooking or at the very least will serve as a great reminder of the fun day you spent with your pet.

Adventure Is Out There

Get out of the house and go exploring! Take random turns and end up at a new destination or plan something out. You could go hiking, walk through a new town or maybe just take a different route to one of you and your pets favorite places.

Things You May Need:

  • K9 Explorer Collar
  • Travel Bowl
  • Control Handle Harness

I, personally, can’t keep a plant alive to save my life but if you have a green thumb then gardening is a great summer activity for you and your pet. I know what you’re thinking, how is your dog going to be helpful when gardening. They can dig the holes for you, of course! Also, this is a great opportunity to practice your sit, stays or just allow your dog to enjoy the yard while you garden.

Social Petworking

I don’t know about you, but I find myself scrolling through my various social media accounts throughout the day. There’s life updates from friends, news stories, but most importantly, pet accounts to awe and laugh over. It’s hard to even scroll through any of your social media feeds and not see at least one pet picture or video, which most of us will stop and enjoy. Well, the entire month of June is dedicated to recognizing all the pets that have joined social networking and bring us those quick little moments of joy during our scrolling sessions. Thankfully at Coastal Pet, we are able to work closely with a few of these accounts and stare at their cute pictures all day! We randomly chose 5 of our models out of a hat so we could shine a spotlight on some of our furrends!

Royalsdiary 19

One of our favorite dynamic duos has to be Royal and Ruby, two Labrador retrievers, who make any environment look like a runaway or the perfect spot for a photoshoot! They’re down to wear basically anything, especially if it’s pink or have a photoshoot anywhere if food is somehow involved. One of their favorite products is the Comfort Wrap® Harness which makes their walks and photoshoots easier and more enjoyable.

Nala _the _bengal 5

Nala challenges the stereotype of how a cat behaves. While she does enjoy her time inside playing with her Mega Turbo™ Scratcher, you’ll most likely find her outside exploring, hiking, climbing trees, riding boats or burying her paws in the sand at the beach. She relies on her Figure “H” Adjustable Cat Harness to support her worldly explorations and captaining of her boat and family to safety.

Travels _of _bella 28

If you need Bella, you definitely won’t find her at home! She is busy discovering every inch of the Oregon mountain side and forests. Her K9 Explorer® Reflective Padded harness is a constant companion during her adventures and camping trips. Her puppy eyes are hypnotizing and can convince anyone to do whatever Bella wants—from longer walks to more treats. She likes her paws down in the dirt, but she won’t turn down being picked up and held occasionally.

Opietheflamester 13

Being surrounded by a lot of your favorite toys doesn’t sound like a terrible life, but especially when you have a brother to constantly play with! Can we have your life Opie? All kidding aside, Opie is a cat who likes his options which is why the Turbo Transform It!™ is a favorite due to Opie’s ability to adjust it to fit his mood and how willing he is to share the fun with his brother, Binx. In order to keep his energy high for his crazy play time, Opie also enjoys the occasional power nap and cuddle session.

Chihuahua .campanita 3

Have you ever wanted a pocket sized best friend? Campanita is the perfect match for you then! She is always there to help with anything, from morning yoga, laundry, snuggles in bed or early morning coffee breaks. Campanita is most comfortable in her Li’l Pals® Comfort Mesh® harness that allows her to easily jump between her favorite activities while still being the cutest Chihuahua around.

These are only a few of the great accounts we get to work with and the accounts available for your enjoyment. So, put on your comfiest pair of PJs, nestle into your spot on the couch, and scroll through some of the social petworking accounts for endless amounts of happiness!

Don't Forget - It's Pet Appreciation Week!

I’m used to the usual puppy dog eyes during dinner but lately, I’ve been getting one too many pitiful eyed looks from my dog. Let me get one thing straight, they aren’t sad looks, “I’m hungry” looks or just the usual “I want to play” looks. These are different. It’s a “you forgot something and I’m going to make you feel guilty” kind of look. Bad thing is? I didn’t know what I should be feeling guilty over until I looked at my calendar. In big, bold font was written Pet Appreciation Week. How had I forgot? Who knows! According to my dog’s glances, I should have set alarms, had an airplane write it in the sky and spared no expense when it came to pampering her all week long. If you’re like me and missed the not-so subtle clues from your pet, worry no more. I’ll spare you the added guilt and share my Pet Appreciation Week ideas with you. Pick one, pick them all or succumb to your dog giving you the death stare while you sleep – your choice!

You can never go wrong with toys. I have yet to find a dog whose ears don’t perk up at the sound of a new squeaky toy. If you have a swimmer who can’t get enough of the water, the new Rascals® Fetch Toys or the Rascals® Mesh Fiesty Flappers ™ will make a great addition to their toy chest. These toys are not only great for a game of fetch and keep away, but they also float in water. Maybe these toys are too big for your pup? The Li’l Pals® Replaceable Squeaker Toys offer unlimited fun with vibrant colors, engaging shapes and easy access to a replaceable squeaker. We didn’t forget our feline friends. The Turbo Scratcher® is the ultimate gift any cat could want but if you already have one, try the new Transform It!™ Corrugate Toys. These toys fit perfectly inside the Turbo Scratcher® center and transform into four different shapes!

Moses Snuggle

Let's Go on a Pet-cation!

Summer never seems to be long enough to pack in all the activities we want to do. Instead, we have to make the most of the time we have. So, think about including your pets in the summer fun! There are many vacations or stay-cations options your pets can join in, such as a camping trip, road trip or even a visit to a swanky pet-friendly hotel. Once your travel plans are booked, there are a few things you need to do before you leave!

Nala Vet

Vet Visit

Your pet should visit their vet before you leave to update their vaccinations and get any medication they may need during the trip. You can also ask for their records to take with you in case of an emergency.

Bella k9

If you don’t already, you could also get your pet microchipped while at the vet. Having multiple forms of identification for your pet is recommended in case they lose their tag while hiking on trails or strutting down city streets.

Bergan Car Harness

Some pets love car rides, while others are terrified. So how long your pet will be in the car needs to be factored into the planning of your trip. You can help your pet become more comfortable by starting with smaller car rides and giving them little rewards when they behave properly during the ride.

Beagle Bed

Know your Pet

The breed, age, and temperament of your pet will help you determine what items to bring on your trip. Maybe bring some engaging toys to keep them entertained on the ride, identify how often your pet needs to relieve themselves, and recognize how quickly your pet may overheat along with how long it takes to cool down. You can also bring items that bring them comfort, such as a favorite toy or blanket.

Moses Fetch

You would think it would be quick and simple to pack everything your pet needs for the trip, but we compiled a list of necessities just in case you left something off yours!

  • Collar, leash, and/or harness: Depending on what you’re planning to do on your trip determines the type of collar, leash, and/or harness you take with you. Make sure to bring multiples of everything for your different plans or in case something gets worn out in all the fun and needs replaced.
  • Reflective items: If your plans include any night adventures, consider getting your pet reflective and/or light up collars and leashes. Lazer Brite® offers various fun and colorful patterns that are reflective and can be seen from up to 600 feet away.
  • Identification items: As previously mentioned, your pet should have identification and even back-up identification. The EZ Change® ID clip makes moving your pet’s identification from collar to collar easier!
  • Food/water & bowls: Treats are also a great idea! To keep your pet strong and energized during your trip and explorations, make sure to bring along bowls to enjoy a quick water break! The Bergan® Travel Bowl is easy to carry and take along for long journeys.
  • Medication/pest protection: Your pet’s health should be consistently maintained so don’t forget their medications. Also bring medical supplies in case your pet gets injured, such as gauze. The Hideaway™ collar should be added to your collection to hold your pet’s flea and tick collar to protect them against any nearby pests.
  • Toys: Keeping your pet engaged and active is important for their health and happiness, so bring along Rascals® Fetch toys to offer your pet all kinds of options to play with in the car, in the woods, in the city and even in water!
  • Tie out: some locations, such as campsites, require you to tie out your pet, so pack any combination of stake and cable that can handle the strength of your pet, like the Titan® Stake and Cable Tie Out Combo.
  • Sleeping supplies: When your pet goes to lie their head down at night, they should also be comfortable. Bring along their bed, blanket, crate, or anything they use for sleeping.
  • Cleaning supplies: Pets make messes and most seem to be masters at finding messes, so bring along cleaning supplies, such as towels and anything to clean up their bathroom messes — like the Bergan® poo bags.
  • Travel supplies: Your pet should also be secured when they get in the car. The Bergan® Auto Harness buckles your pet into their seat to keep them and you safe during car rides. A carrier may be another option to keep your pet safe.
  • Miscellaneous: It all depends on where you’re going! A coat may be necessary for cold climates, while sunblock should be packed for sunny days.

It’s hard to believe that pets require all of these things, but these products will make it an enjoyable trip for the whole family. We converted the previous list into a printable checklist to make getting ready for your summer fun easier!

Pet Packing List

Responsible Pet Ownership Month

Being a responsible pet owner goes beyond variously throwing your pet a treat and buying adorable toys - although your pets highly encourage these! Things like vet trips, bath time, and saying the word 'no' are crucial when owning a pet. To make it easy, we've identified four key actions you can take to be the best pet owner you can be.

Owning a pet is a lifelong commitment and not something to be rushed into. If you thought a fish was difficult, wait till you bring your dog or cat home. It'll change your life - for the better of course. You need to be ready to commit to the relationship for the life of your pet. This includes providing exercise, mental stimulation, proper training and socialization. Essentially, you need to be ready to commit your time to owning a pet. Although this may seem overwhelming, it is astounding how quickly a daily walk and a training class become a part of your daily routine.

Stryker with Jim, Kathy, and Kim

Pet ownership isn't just a time commitment but also a financial commitment. Your pet will need food, water, a collar, proper identification, vet visits and preventative health care like flea and tick medication. It's important that you account for all of these routine expenses and the unplanned potential emergencies like your pet meet the neighborhood groundhog.

Are your finances are in order? Then let's talk collars. A cute collar is great, but you should pick a collar based on the lifestyle you plan on living with your pet. We have made a quick cheat sheet to help you find the right collar:

You're cuddle buddies who like to watch Netflix and take the occasional walk around the neighborhood.
You treat every day like a fashion show and want to make a statement wherever you go.
You don't see limits, you want to hike and explore the world.
You enjoy the simple things - a casual stroll with the stars over your head and the moon guiding your way.
You prefer earth-friendly materials that are natural and comfortable.
You walk with confidence and breathe determination. You enjoy running, biking, swimming and anything athletic.
You enjoy the simple things: morning walks, functional fashion and hard work.
You can't imagine not being outside.
You're always on the move and can turn any moment into something fun.
Your style is anything but predictable. You love fun, vibrant colors and patterns.
You consider yourself a night owl who finds comfort in the moon and stars.
You prefer earth-friendly materials that are natural and comfortable.

Make sure your pet is properly identifiable with ID tags, microchips or a personalized collar. Keep your contact information up-to-date with new phone numbers or address changes.

Maybe you hate the noise of ID tags clanking? The EZ Change ID Clip comes with a silencer - this will help eliminate the noise. Want to do away with hanging identification altogether? Now you can have a personalized collar for your pet that includes their name and your phone number, so your pet is always easily identified.

Personalized dog collar

Here's the fun part. Your pet is going to want and need love. They are going to want to cuddle, play and always be by your side. Have food? They are in your face. Accidently step on a toy? Careful, their frantic running may take you out. Feeling sad? Those snuggles will make everything better. They will give you unconditional love. In return they expect commitment and love in the form of toys, treats or just hugs and snuggles. This is the most rewarding part of being a responsible dog owner. Enjoy every minute of it!

How Big is Your Bark?

2018 is The Year of the Dog, and January is Walk Your Dog month, so what better time to get back to basics - like choosing the right collar and harness for your dog?

The handy guide below will help remove the guess work from buying a collar or harness.

Size Chart

Choosing a Collar

Measure dog's neck at "A" (see above) and place two fingers between the dog and measuring device for correct length needed. Lengths are based on the measurement from the end of the buckle to the last hole, the largest adjustment.

Collars with metal buckles are perfect for temporary tie out situations. Choose a double-ply collar for large or extra-strong dogs to ensure strength and durability.

Coastal Pet offers an endless selection of collars, so you will be sure to find just what you are looking for at

6962 Red20 7

Choosing a Harness

Measure your dog's girth behind the front legs at "B" (see above) and add two fingers for the correct size.

Harnesses are great for walking smaller dogs or dogs that tend to pull as the pressure gets distributed across the chest instead of the neck. They are available in a wide variety of materials, including nylon, mesh and fabric. Choose a construction that suits your preference and the needs of your dog.
